As Joshua and the people of Israel advanced to conquer and possess the Promised Land, they were deceived by the Gibeonites, who were neighbors to the Israelites, but pretended to be Ambassadors from a country far away.

Their cleverly crafted stories, backed up by convincing evidence deceived the leaders of Israel, who made a Covenant of peace with the Gibeonites, which they could never back down from.

The reason the leaders of Israel were defrauded was because they did not seek the counsel of God, but made decisions based on their own thinking and perceptions.
